Designed by Alec Issigonis, who would later create the Mini, the Morris Minor was launched in 1948 and became one of the most beloved British cars of all time, going on to become the first British car to reach one million units produced.
In 1953, it was joined by the Traveller, an estate version whose most distinctive feature is its exposed frame of white English ash. Far more than a decorative touch, this woodwork forms an integral part of the car’s rear structure and gives the Traveller its unmistakable character. From 1956, the Minor 1000 brought a larger 948 cc engine and a one-piece windscreen, making it the most refined and practical version of this timeless design.
This Morris Minor 1000 Traveller was bought new in 1959 from National Motors on Yates Street in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and remained with its first caring owner for an impressive 43 years, covering just 36'000 miles of picnics, shopping trips, and family visits.
In 2002, it passed to its second owner, who christened it "Serendipity" and undertook a careful two-year restoration with one guiding principle: to keep the car as it was delivered new, restoring rather than replacing wherever possible and preserving its beautiful patina and original character.
The ash framework was removed and inspected, then finished by the Alison Piano Company with nine coats of traditional Epifanes marine spar varnish, given its warm golden tone using a tea-tinting method. The body was repainted in Almond Green by Capital Auto Painters in Victoria, with the doors, wings and body panels removed. All the glass and rubber seals were renewed, the latter sourced from England, and the headliner and carpets were replaced, the carpets in Wilton wool. Remarkably, the red leather seats are original and have never been re-dyed, only carefully maintained. The water pump has been reconditioned, the period radio professionally serviced, and the tyres have covered fewer than 400 miles.
Today, this Morris Minor 1000 Traveller is finished in Almond Green over its original Red leather interior with Red Wilton wool carpets. It is accompanied by a known history and various original documents, including the book on automotive woodwork used during its restoration.
It represents a rare opportunity to acquire a lovingly preserved example of one of Britain's most endearing classics.
