The Ferrari Dino 208 GT4 arrived at a crossroads in the evolution of Ferrari's road cars. After its launch in 1975, Dino still existed as a marque in its own right alongside Ferrari, representing a more accessible entry into the world of Maranello, as embodied by the six-cylinder Dino 206 GT and Dino 246 GT that preceded it. In 1976, the two names were finally brought together.
The Dino 208 GT4 was the smaller sibling of the Dino 308 GT4, unveiled at the 1973 Paris Motor Show as the first production Ferrari with a mid-engined V8 and the marque's first mid-engined 2+2. It was conceived specifically for the Italian market, where car with engines larger than two litres were subject to a value-added tax (VAT) of a whopping 38%. To avoid this punitive taxation, Ferrari reduced the displacement of the engine to 1'991 cc, creating the smallest production V8 ever fitted to a Ferrari road car and combining performance with greater usability and affordability.
The transversely mounted 90-degree engine features belt-driven twin overhead camshafts per bank and four twin-choke Weber carburettors, delivering a very capable 180 hp. Power is transmitted through a fully synchronised five-speed gearbox, positioned below and behind the engine's wet sump.
Its crisp, wedge-shaped lines, penned by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, perfectly captured the sharp-suited style of the era. The Dino 208 GT4 can be distinguished from its larger sibling by the plain aluminium finish o the louvres on the front lid and engine cover, in place of the Dino 308 GT4's satin black. Disctinctive boomerang-shaped air intakes on the sail panels frame the rear quarter windows, with the left feeding cooling air into the oil radiator and the right supplying the carburettors. Compact and well-balanced, the design has stood the test of time and aged like fine wine.
With only 840 examples built between 1975 and 1980, the Dino 208 GT4 remains a rarely seen Ferrari today.
