Highlights
After the Second World War, Alfa Romeo, once a builder of exclusive, hand-crafted sports cars for an elite clientele, faced a devastated plant and a weakened European economy, and even its first production-line model, the 1950 Alfa Romeo 1900, struggled to find buyers. The answer was the Giulietta, unveiled as Bertone's graceful Sprint coupé at the 1954 Turin Salon and soon joined by the 4-door Giulietta Berlina and Pinin Farina's breathtaking Giulietta Spider, all powered by a sophisticated, rev-happy 1'290 cc twin-cam engine. With nearly 177'000 examples built, the Giulietta became a resounding success that saved Alfa Romeo from bankruptcy, while the rare Giulietta Spider Veloce, with twin weber carburettors and 90 hp in a car of just over 850 kg, reached 180 km/h and ranked among the fastest road cars of the 1950s.
In 1959, the 101 Series Giulietta brought greather reliability, receiving a slightly longer 2'250 mm wheelbase, fixed quarter-light and larger taillights, before the 1962 Giulia raised displacement to 1570 cc for stronger low-end torque and added front disc brakes. Visually, the Giulia is set apart only by its bonnet bulge, needed to clear the taller engine, and minor interior changes. Its Spider Veloce variant shared the same performance upgrades, producing 112 hp and a top speed of 200 km/h. Only 1'091 examples of the Giulia Spider Veloce were produced between 1964 - 1966.
This particular car is quite exceptional for a number of reasons. It was completed in Arese on 3rd March 1965 and sold in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1979, the car was exported to Indiana, USA, wehre it remained with one owner until 2013, at which point it was brought back to Europe.
What makes this car absolutely outstanding is the quality of its restoration, which was carried out from 2017 - 2019 in a true "no expense spared" restoration. With examples of this model, due to their value, most of them never received more than a cosmetic restoration, but not this car. The chassis was brought to bare metal, the inner side sills and floor panels were completely rebuilt, and all metal panels fastidiously reworked with the result of a perfect metal surface and gaps. The same attention to detail was applied to all mechanical components which were brought back to factory new condition. The engine and its performance was completely overhauled. This Giulia Spider Veloce is arguably the best specimen in existence today.
It is presented today in its Matching Colours of Celeste over a Nero interior with its Matching Numbers engine. It benefits from an Alfa Romeo Heritage Certificate and a comperehensive documentation of its thorough restoration.
