The Ferrari 250 GT Coupé Pinin Farina, serial number #1743 GT, was delivered by the famous Ferrari dealers Eleanor and John von Neumann in Beverly Hills to Willy-Peter Dätwyler, a gentleman racing driver from Zurich who had made his fortune in the USA.
The price for the race-spec car was USD 12,000. The engine is a competition variant featuring higher compression, sharper camshafts, Weber 40 DCL6 carburettors, a limited-slip differential and servo-assisted Dunlop disc brakes. The Foglio Montaggio Motore states: “Motore competizione con distribuzione 128 F”. In addition, a central Marchal headlamp was fitted and the Cavallino Rampante on the radiator grille was repositioned.
The car has matching engine and gearbox numbers. It has been extensively restored and returned to its original ‘Grigio Argento MM 16003’ livery with a Connolly ‘Pelle Rossa VM 3171’ leather interior, and is now in the process of receiving Ferrari Classiche certification from Niki Hasler AG. Numerous original documents are available, including the owner’s manual, the spare parts catalogue, the warranty card and detailed documentation of the restoration.
In June 1960, Road & Track had a 250 GT Coupé Pinin Farina tested by Phil Hill, who would later become Ferrari’s F1 world champion. He writes:
“It’s a car for those who know, and appreciate, the difference (compared to a less expensive GT) and can afford to pay. A man or woman (the car is so easy to drive that it can be, and is, driven every day by women) who savours the sound, the feel, the stability and performance of a car like this will consider the money it costs well spent. This is a car designed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, and it shows.”
