Named after a hot desert wind of the Sahara, the Maserati Ghibli was unveiled at the 1966 Turin Motor Show. Its long bonnet, low and wide stance and sweeping fastback with a large rear glass panel were penned by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro at Ghia, and the Ghibli is still regarded as one of his finest designs and one of the most desirable grand tourers of its era. Despite its two-seat layout, its generous luggage space made it an ideal companion for long-distance touring. Initially powered by a 4.7-litre V8 producing 310 hp, the Ghibli was offered from 1970 as the SS, with the engine enlarged to 4.9 litres and 335 hp. With its abundant torque allowing relaxed, effortless cruising in the higher gears, the SS is today the most sought-after version of the Ghibli.
This particular Maserati Ghibli 4.9 SS Coupé is a very special car and certainly one of the best examples in existence today. It was built in February 1972, finished in Blu Ischia Metallizzato 106-A-51 with an intreior in Pelle Senape PAC 1775 Connolly leather and specified with power steering and a radio, as confirmed by correspondance with Maserati S.p.A. Consulenza Storica.
It was dispatched from factory on 8 February 1972 to the official Maserati dealer Orfeo Ferasin in Vincenza and first registered in March 1972 to its first owner Mr. Virgilio Zanuso.
From 2007 to 2008, a major mechanical overhaul was commissioned with foremost Maserati expert Antonio Costantini in Zurich, Switzerland, with the aim of returning the car to outstanding mechanical condition regardless of cost, and including a new made-to-measure stainless steel exhaust system.
With so many examples of the Ghibli neglected over the years, it has become increasingly difficult to find one in such a remarkable state of originality and excellent mechanical condition today.
Remarkably, the car has passed through only 4 total owners until today, covering a mere 51'810 km. It retains its original colour combination and its interior is still in excellently original condition with a beautiful patina. Together with its original exterior paint, it makes for a most distinguished and elegant colour combination.
This Maserati Ghibli 4.9 SS Coupé is accompanied by correspondance with Maserati S.p.A. Consulenza Storica, EEC papers, and the invoices and photographs documenting its mechanical overhaul.
